despair. Of course, many other thematic elements emanate from the story, but one can clearly see that elements from The Confessions are reflected in Emmas world view. Madame Bovary,
in Flauberts fictional account, is a character who is not unlike Gone With the Winds female protagonist Scarlett. Emma Bovary imagines what life would be like in high society. Yet,
her ideas are not realized and while this is the case, she does marry and live beyond her means anyway. Interestingly, Rousseau claims the following: "money never tempted me."
Yet, there are stories throughout his confessions that point to the notion that he did steal things and was not the least bit bothered by it. At the same
time, the confession of Rousseau reveals a fear of money, which is perhaps something that Bovary dealt with as well. Rousseau (2003) writes: "I am convinced the dread of
taking money was, in a great measure, the effect of education. There was mingled with the idea of it the fear of infamy, a prison, punishment, and death: had I
even felt the temptation, these objects would have made me tremble; whereas my failings appeared a species of waggery, and, in truth, they were little else; they could but occasion
a good trimming, and this I was already prepared for." In Madame Bovary, money is treated subtly but sometimes stern references are made. Money was at issue throughout most of
the work. For example, in one description, the following is noted: "He lived on his wifes money for the first two or three years" (Flaubert, 1982, p.4). Clearly, everything came
