Rousseaus republic is thus no democracy at all. While some would support that statement, the facts seem to indicate that Rousseaus government is indeed a representative democracy. It becomes
important to note the difference between direct democracy and representative democracy. In the history of the world, there has not been a direct democracy, even in Athens. Some might say
especially in Athens, particularly in light of its social hierarchy. Some could argue the same for the United States for example with its Clintons and Bushes and Kennedys; the government
is essentially run by the countrys "royal" families. Further, a true democracy is not practical. Imagine if the citizens of America were in one room. Fights would break out
over many issues and nothing would be resolved. The representative form of democracy operates within a particular scheme, making room to present arguments in an organized fashion. In an argument
about democracy, some may wrongly support the notion that America was meant to be a direct democracy. There is really no practicality in embracing a direct democracy. It is not
feasible, even in Rousseaus time and place. Rousseau writes: "In every real democracy, magistracy is not an advantage, but a burdensome charge which cannot justly be imposed on one individual
rather than another" (PG). Rousseau does seem to support the will of the people. It seems that arguments against the man come from the notion that there is
