story "Masters of the Dew" and Joseph Zobels "Black Shack Alley" we have just that, the story of young men searching for their identity amidst conflict concerning culture and society.
In the following paper we briefly examine each story and then briefly compare and contrast the two as they involve the search for identity. Masters of the Dew
In this particular story we have a tale of a young man, something of a prodigal son, who is returning to his home community. His community was once a very
beautiful and thriving community. Now, however it is a community that is suffering from a drought and many other negative realities. When Manuel returns to this town he, in essence,
begins his real journey into identity. His community is no longer pleasant and the people no longer seem connected to one another. Manuel sets off determined to find water
for the land. If he can bring water then his community will be strong once again. Through many different experiences, this young man finds himself, or at least begins to
find himself. He finds love, he finds an enemy, and he truly begins to solidify what he thinks is important in the world, all aspects of character development which involve
the search for identity. And, in the end we see his search as a success. Throughout it all Manuel struggles and learns, bringing life to the land and hope
to his people. He has shown determination and through vision has been able to bring the people together once more for the good of all. While this story clearly has
socialist symbolism, it is also clearly the story of one young mans search for identity within his community and his people, or culture. Black Shack Alley In this
