paper examines and argues how Rose is the true protagonist of the play, not Troy. Rose as Protagonist: Wilsons "Fences" In the beginning of the play there is
Troy, discussing his work with his friend Bono. Every week they get together at the end of the week, after they have been paid, and they sit and drink. They
discuss their lives and their work, and they also discuss their women. Troys woman is Rose and Rose essentially asks very little of Troy. The most important thing she desires
is a fence. The fence is very symbolic of how Rose desires to keep her loved ones around her, to protect them, and to create a garden that nourishes her
and her family. She is essentially the glue that holds the family together, playing the peacekeeper as much as possible between her husband and son, and bringing to light truths
that Troy needs to hear, but will not hear from anyone else. At one point Bono is confronting Troy about an affair he thinks Troy is having, something that
is a fact. Troys son Cory wants to know why Rose wants them to build a fence. Cory says, tells Troy "Some people build fences to keep people out ...
and other people build fences to keep people in. Rose wants to hold on to you all. She loves you" (Wilson 62). Troy replies indignantly that he does not need
anyone to remind him that she loves him because he knows that. However, he is not the type of man who seems to show his love or appreciation of her.
