who are different from themselves. Stacey Yorks goals in her text Roots & Wings, Affirming Culture in Early Childhood Programs (2003) is designed to address these goals. The following examination
of this text offers an overall summation of the books content and structure before concluding with a personal recommendation. Structure of the Text The first chapters focus on defining
issues, while offering information and insight into the numerous "multicultural and anti-bias issues" that have an affect on todays classrooms (York, 2003, p. xiii). As this indicates, the first chapters
offer information, but then the author switches focus and the latter chapter offer concrete instruction and suggested activities that teachers can implement to accomplish the goals and issues discussed in
previous chapters. As this suggests, each "chapter is a building block" and, collectively, this structure offers readers a foundation for understanding the overall topic (York, 2003, p. xiii). The first
chapter introduces the topic and the nature of todays changing early childhood education classrooms, offering an overview. In the second chapter, York refutes commonly held misconceptions that concern the topic,
such as the idea that young children do not notice or understand bias. Chapter three discusses racism, addressing key questions and issues, such as how teachers should both recognize and
comprehend the interactions between environment and childhood development. Chapter four defines and discusses care and education that are culturally response, specifically focusing on how culture shapes how children are
