we know as the New Deal was instigated during the presidency of Franklin D. Roosevelt. The New Deal was Roosevelts answer to the Great Depression and the social and
economic considerations that era entailed. While the New Deal would be effective over the short term, it would be the impetus of the welfare state, that economic situation which
today is being blamed for a number of social problems. The factors which made the need for a radical new approach like Roosevelts
New Deal were many. The stock market crash of 1929 was most certainly a contributing factor to the Great Depression which would follow. In reality, however, the causes
of the Depression were much deeper than that singular event. Historians are often the most non-committal in identifying these causative factors, preferring evidently to remember this time in history
as one of the great unresolved mysteries of the 20th century (Norton, 1997). When they do broach the subject more aggressively they often are vague in their approach and
conclusion (Norton, 1997). In fact, the societal problems which characterized this era can be traced to a number of phenomena in addition to the stock market crash. The
situation which developed after the end of World War I was one of the primary factors. The culmination of World War I left
the World in an unstable socio-political status. This was particularly true in the United States. During the war the average household had experienced considerable changes in their spending
