A master of personal presentations, Reagan used his rhetoric to inspire a nation, but failed in his actual actions to make life better for the American public. The value of his legacy continues to be debated today. BIOGRAPHY - EARLY YEARS Born in Tampico, Illinois in 1911, Ronald Wilson Reagan would become the 40th President of the United States (Ronald Wilson Reagan, 2005). It is reported that Reagan had a difficult childhood. His father, Jack Reagan was an itinerant show salesman and a reported alcoholic (Ronald Wilson Reagan, 2005). Reagan was nearsighted and this caused him problems during his school years (Ronald Wilson Reagan, 2005). When called upon to read his papers, Reagan would ham it up and this was the beginning of his passion for public speaking. Reagan began his public career as a radio sportscaster and then in 1937, he took a screen test for Warner Brothers Studio and as a result signed a seven-year contract with them (Ronald Wilson Reagan, 2005). Reagan was cast in movies as the All-American boy and appeared in approximately fifty feature films. Warner Brothers reported that by 1941 only Errol Flynn received more fan mail than did Ronald Reagan (Ronald Wilson Reagan, 2005). Having played the role of the All-American boy so often, Reagan began identify with that persona. When World War II broke out, Reagan narrated training films as a part of the armys motion picture unit (Ronald Wilson Reagan, 2005). His career faltered after the war and in 1948, his first wife, Jane Wyman, divorced him (Ronald Wilson Reagan, 2005).
