one of our twentieth century political leaders should be nominated for a Twentieth Century Genius Award, it is Ronald Reagan. Reagans contributions to the United States and to the world in general straddle the Age of Modernism and the Age of Pluralism. His ideas played, and continue to play, a critical role in cultural development. Reagan excelled as a leader during times of crisis. He also excelled in delineating his visions for the world and setting an agenda to achieve those visions. Those visions included a world where there was indeed justice and equality for all. There are many reasons to nominate Reagan for receipt of a Twentieth Century Genius Award. One of the more convincing, however, are the thoughts and assessments of a long list of historians and presidential experts who rank Reagan as one of the most admirable Twentieth Century presidents. There are thousands of books and articles in the professional literature hailing Reagan as a great world leader. There have also been official surveys in which Reagan was centered out as one of the more impressive world leaders. A survey conducted by C-Span in 1999, for example, ranks Reagan eleven out of a list of forty-one U.S. presidents. His name is only topped by such greats as Abraham Lincoln, Franklin D. Roosevelt, George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt and Harry Truman. The argument might be made, of course, that sometimes a survey is only as useful as the paper it is printed on. The C-Span survey, however, included the views and opinions of fifty-eight historians who numerically ranked the presidents on the basis of ten different criteria. Those criteria included public ...
