short stories that depict the grittiness of the southwest. The common motif revealed in all of his stories represents a hard-working middle class man who is working long hours to
barely make ends meet. Gilb depicts the stark reality of "border" life and he describes the setting so accurately that it allows the reader to feel the sweat and pain
the main character is experiencing. For these individuals, living in American is an economic and cultural struggle and Gilb relays that through his choice of words and his vivid descriptions
of the neighborhoods in which his characters live. In the short story "Romeros Shirt," Gilb reveals an El Paso man named Juan Romero who has worked odd jobs doing mostly
manual labor. The paint on his house is slowly chipping away where a den is used as a bedroom. He paints fences, digs ditches, plants trees, lays carpet and picks
cotton. Whatever he is told to do he does. He musters enough money to have a house and raise a family. But the odd thing is he is content. Most
people in Juans shoes are emotionally unstable and depressed due to the lack of funds in their bank accounts. Romero came from a poverty-stricken home so any money he can
