stories which have the same basic theme. In the most simplistic of descriptions, West Side Story was a modern take on Shakespeares classic tale of forbidden love. However, understanding that
the time period, format, and various other elements are quite different one can assume that there are as many, if not more, differences as there are similarities. The following paper
provides a comparison and contrast of the two stories as it involves communicating subject matter, political agendas, and visual presentation. Communicating Subject Matter When we think of communicating the
subject matter it is perhaps important to note that both stories are, or were, intended for live audiences. Although one can read Shakespeares plays, and we are talking about the
film production of West Side Story, the truth is that both were dramatic productions, not stories to be read or seen on the big screen. In this respect they are
both productions that originally aimed at communicating through a stage production. In addition, we must also take into account that it is easier to read Shakespeares play than it
is to find a production of the play. At the same time it is far more likely that one is more likely to watch the film West Side Story than
ever see a production of the original play. In light of such information we can assume that, in their original context, both stories used the same form of approach when
wishing to communicate with the audience. There are, however, other aspects of communicating a story which make the two works incredibly different. In understanding some of the differences, as well
