the audience is told, from the beginning, that the lovers will lose their lives because they love one another. In short, the reader or viewer knows what will happen in
this story before it happens. In light of this such things as fate, foreshadowing, and hate all play a very important, as well as symbolic, role. The following paper examines
these three elements discussing the similarities and differences as they relate to Romeo and Juliet themselves. Romeo and Juliet: Fate As
mentioned, the play begins with the notion of fate. This is seen when the chorus tells the reader/viewer, "A pair of star-crossd lovers take their life; Whole misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents strife. The fearful passage of their death-markd love" (Shakespeare I Prologue). This presentation offers the viewer/reader the understanding that the stars, fate itself,
has created a situation wherein these two lovers are ultimately fated to die because of their love for one another. It is presented in such a manner so that the
reader/viewer knows that there is no way out of this fateful situation for the two. In this it can also be stated
that fate is not different for either of them. While they may arrive at this fate they are not different for they are both following the very same path of
fate, a fate that involves both of them. Without the other fate would have no role and as such one cannot necessarily say that their fates are different. One could,
however, perhaps argue that Romeo was more aware, or more combative, concerning the fate of the two lovers. For example, towards the end when Romeo thinks that Juliet is dead
