We see this in the films of Europe more than we do in the films of the United States because Europe was the center of death and warfare while the
United States remained somewhat isolated from the suffering. Two particular films speak of some of the changes in the industry. One film, directed by Rossellini, is "Rome, Open City." Another
film is "The Bicycle Thieves" directed by Vittorio de Sica. The following paper briefly examines the two and the compares and contrasts them. Rome, Open City One critic
notes that ":Rossellini (1906-77) was attempting to make films in the harshest of environments. The Italian film industry was in ruins due to the war and the occupations by the
Germans and Americans" and that "Rossellini and some friends were working on the scenario for the film before the war finished" (Rome, Open City). As such there was a
great deal of conflicting conditions to work through. And, throughout it all we see that "Rossellini is not interested in objectivity. He deliberately uses emotive techniques to put forward his
messages" which focus on the fight against fascism (Rome, Open City). We see that "Rossellinis use of babies and young children can not be seen as anything other than an
attempt to make to the viewer sympathetic to his ideas...the film highlights the many conflicting realities which are inherent in the fight against fascism" Rome, Open City). The plot
of the film involves subjects one would not expect from the time period. It is a subtle and powerful study of Romans during the Occupation. In the midst of the
