America. Beardens paintings and collage, VanDerZees photographs, and Basquiats gritty, graffiti-like paintings demonstrate the ways in which race is intimately tied to social class and status and the struggles that
occur where they intersect but are then blocked by the "mainstream" (read "white") status quo. The student who explores the foundations and critical perspectives related to virtually any aspect
of art throughout history should understand that art can always serve as a means by which social theorists and historians are able to gain some measure of understanding into a
cultures ideals and belief systems. The purpose of art, the creation of art, the interpretation of art, and the teaching of art has always and still remains a process in
which the interpreter fits into certain parameters as surely as the art work itself. What each of these three artists shows the 21st century person viewing their art is a
personal interpretation of what it meant and means to be Black in the United States. In VanDerZees photographs, images of respectability, upward mobility, family structure, and a recognition of the
cultures leaders and "stars" such as Joe Louis, Adam Clayton, Sr., and Adam Clayton Powell, Jr.. Beardens paintings and photomontage collages capture some of the essence of urban life, jazz
music, and Black pride. Basquiats work demonstrates both the vibrancy and despair of modern urban life. Ironically, Basquiat: ". . . hated being known as simply a "black" painter,
despite his homages to heroes such as Charlie Parker and the black boxing champions he canonized in a series of iconic paintings" (Hubbard 31). "Seeing" the Uniqueness of Their Art
