of the zaniness, in Twelfth Night, Shakespeare seeks to define romantic love. It examines whether or not it is solely upon physical attraction, more commonly known as love at first sight; if so, is it authentic and can it mature into an enduring love that lasts, according to wedding vows, "from death do us part?" The play features three sets of characters that, throughout the course of the action, fall in and out of love with each other. In most instances, this love is based on physical attraction. First, there is Orsino, the Duke of Illyria, who is pining away for his love, Lady Olivia. He wants to marry her but she will not hear of it because she is still observing a period of mourning for her deceased brother. He laments in the plays opening scene, "O, when mine eyes did see Olivia first, / Methought she purgd the air of pestilence! / That instant was I turnd into a hart, / And my desires, like fell and cruel hounds, / Eer since pursue me" (I.i.20-24). It is obvious that Orsino became convinced of his love for Olivia from the moment they met, and there is no reason to doubt his sincerity of emotion. He is willing to go to any lengths to convince the fair lady to accept his proposal. Meanwhile, there is Viola, who just barely survived a shipwreck that appeared to claim the life of her twin brother, Sebastian. She seeks employment at the Dukes residence under the male guise of Cesario, perhaps assuming her chances of being hired would be better if she was thought to be a man. Orsino takes an immediate liking to his new employee and decides to use her (as Cesario) ...
