piano (Machlis, 1970). It is largely though Chopins genius that the pianos limitations as a concert instrument were overcome, as he developed what is considered to be the modern piano
style (Machlis, 1970). The principal limitation of the piano is it cannot sustain a tone for any great length of time. Through the use of "widely spaced chords in the
bass, sustained by pedal," Chopin succeeded in setting up great masses of tone, which served to "wreathe the melody in enchantment" (Machlis, 1970, p. 84). The ornamentation in his music,
the delicate trills, grace notes and runs of incredible lightness and virtuosity, all combined to prolong the single tones of the piano as if by magic (Machlis, 1970). Chopins
creativity is particularly evident in his large-scale works, such as the four Ballades (Pniewski, 1999). In these works, the listener finds "epic poems of spacious structure, like sagas related by
a bard" (Machlis, 1970, p. 84). In the Ballades, the basic texture of the work comes from the melody and the accompaniment and derives from Chopins genius in manipulating this
formula into new vistas of beauty and creativity. Both elements are stretched, literally, to the extremes of the keyboard to embrace six and a half octaves (Pniewski, 1999). Melodies sweep
up and down the keyboard and accompaniments vary from simple chords to arpeggios that span all possibilities (Pniewski, 1999). Over the course of his career, Chopin developed many interesting
and astonishing transformations to his music. Smendzianki (2003) argues that Chopins Polonaise-Fantaisie, "a piece of exceptional beauty and transcendent contents," deserves particular attention because Chopins innovative style in this work
