of revolutionary fervor and burgeoning free enterprise, which spawned an intense idolization of radical individualism (Abrams, et al, 1968). Romanticism is a term that is often employed as it referred
to a single quality, shared in various degrees by the writers and poets of that time; however, what these writers termed as the "spirit of the age" was expressed in
widely divergent "schools" -- i.e. the "Lake School" of Wordsworth and Coleridge; the "Satanic School" of Byron and Shelly, etc. (Abrams, et al, 1968). Nevertheless, certain broad generalizations can be
made concerning the characteristics of the Romantic age. The pivotal concept that originated during the Romantic era was that the mind, itself, was the creator of the universe that
it perceives (Abrams, et al, 1968). First of all, reflecting this concept, the Romantic era saw the beginning of an introspective mode of writing that, rather exploring society at large,
looked inwardly to use literature as a way of exploring personal space. Secondly, romanticism emphasizes feelings and emotions. Wordsworth defined "good poetry" as the "spontaneous overflow" of feelings (Abrams, et
al, 1968, p. 8). Therefore, the second characteristic of the period could be expressed as a belief in poetic spontaneity and freedom. Thirdly, the Romantics emphasized a connection with nature.
Fourth, while previous generations of poets felt that poetry should address noble or epic topics, the Romantics glorified the beauty of the commonplace and, lastly, the Romantics incorporated aspects
of the supernatural, a sense of "strangeness in beauty," into their work (Abrams, 1968), These characteristics are illustrated by the following brief analysis of some works from this period. On
