(Wertsman). The name means "New Rome" in Latin, and it was given to the country by the Romans, who "conquered Dacia ... in 106 A.D." (Wertsman). The occupation ended in
271 A.D., but the relationship between the Dacians and the Romans remained strong, with the result that "mixed marriages and the adoption of Latin culture and language gradually molded the
