This paper suggests that it is our society that tells us what is acceptable and whats not with regard to personal relationships, and that it does so by means of
narratives and stories. We grow up with them, accept them implicitly, and never think much about it. Discussion Possibly the most striking example of the idea of one man/one woman,
with the man the active pursuer and the woman the passive recipient of his affections, is the fairytale Cinderella. The most popular version of it is the one Charles Perrault
wrote in 1697; it has been retold in many forms including film, dance and onstage as a musical. But if we consider it objectively, its difficult to see what in
the world the prince finds interesting in this doormat: shes passive to the point of being a sponge. She is bullied by her stepmother and stepsisters and never fights back;
she never even raises her voice. We could argue that even if they threw her out shed hardly be worse off than she is now, so her meekness is both
infuriating and false. Then we have the prince, who falls in love with her at the ball because shes beautiful. Period. She has no other qualifications that were aware
of, but shes gorgeous. And for this he turns the kingdom upside down until he finds and marries her. Its a match made in heaven: he has no sense and
