paper examines two pieces of art from different time periods and two different cultures. The artwork examined is a Roman sarcophagus, Slaughter of the Niobids from the end of the
2nd century CE and a Spanish work: Santa Maria de Mur, Christ in Majesty from around 1090-1100. Roman and Spanish Art Compare the approach taken in each sculpture
to the depiction of the human figure. As has often been the case in Roman art the human figures are greatly detailed and are presented in a way that seems
to honor the beauty of the human body. In the sarcophagus the figures are primarily naked and there are numerous characters all intermixed with one another. There is a human
figure that is naked, carrying another naked human figure, and yet also a figure, at least one, that seems fully clothed as well. The entire surface of the sides of
the sarcophagus appears to be a relief sculpture of nothing but one figure after another, many overlapping another. In contrast Christ in Majesty is a piece of art that
does not truly display the human body. The figures are all draped in very colorful clothing and the only things that appear, in terms of the human body, are the
head, hands and feet. There does appear to be one figure that is dressed in what appears to be almost Roman or Greek clothing, apparently an angel, in the upper
left hand corner of the art piece. But, aside from that individual all the human figures are clothed and it is clearly not a painting that presents the human form.
