the two traditions merged (Kleiner and Kleiner, 2004). One of the distinguishing features of Roman portraits is their reality, they clearly depict their subject (Loggia.com, 2004). An initial theory regarding
Roman portraiture is that it was inspired by death masks but more experts now believe that theses masks had little or nothing to do with the masks (Loggia.com, 2004). Instead,
the portrait sculptures that emerged from the Republican period were intended to be an image of real persons (Loggia.com, 2004). In fact, it is the portrait that distinguishes the Romans
from the Greeks (Loggia.com, 2004). The Greeks depicted persons in an idealized way, making them look better in sculpture than they were in real life, not so the Romans (Loggia.com,
2004). It should also be pointed out that the Romans depicted Augustus as a young man, not the 76-year old he was at death (Kleiner and Kleiner, 2004). Kleiner
and Kleiner, however, reported that some experts believe the early artists of Roman portraiture were most likely Greeks, who had a strong antipathy towards the Romans (2004). It has also
been suggested that portraits in the Roman Empire at the time were more a reflection of the culture than of the actual person (Kleiner and Kleiner, 2004). The result was
that the Greek artists tended to exacerbate or over-represent the cultural characteristics (Kleiner and Kleiner, 2004). Harlow and Laurence report that the portraits "of the first century BC reflect an
