When considering the social roles and position in society of women in ancient Rome and ancient Greece, it is probably important to keep in mind that what often appears, from
our twenty-first century perspective, to be an oppressive and limited lifestyle may not have appeared so to the women themselves. Certainly, women had prescribed roles to which they were obliged
to conform, but in many case such roles also carried benefits: the woman was required to subjugate herself to her fathers or husbands authority could also demand his protection, for
example, and a female slave would be protected by laws which dictated how slaves could be treated.
It is true that from our point of view as autonomous individuals such lifestyles might
seem abhorrent, but it must be remembered that they formed an integral part of the much wider network of Greek and Roman social culture. As Mason (2004) points out, in
Roman society women were considered as citizens, but did not necessarily have the kind of rights which we would associate with citizenship - they could not vote or take part
in government policy-making, for example.
The level of education varied, and all women had some degree of personal freedom - lower class women were expected to work, but those in the higher
social strata would remain at home, and undertake domestic and household duties. It would, though, be inaccurate to regard such women as domestic "skivvies" - an upper-class Roman matron would
