offer us a mystery of sorts. Fitzgeralds story leaves us with a mystery while Whartons solves a mystery. Both of the mysteries in the story are those that address a
hidden secret as it involves young and innocent love. In the following paper we examine the two stories, comparing and contrasting the elements, settings, and authors. The Mystery With
Fitzgeralds story we first note that there is a young woman, Julia, who is incredibly attracted to a man she finds powerfully and mysteriously handsome. She says "Hes an archangel,
a mountain lion, hes something to eat" (Fitzgerald line 14). And, later when she hears that he is someone to be avoided for a lady of station and refinement she
is drawn to him even more as she finds his outsider position as intriguing and tempting, though she finds out later he is a serious alcoholic. This sets the stage
for an obviously dysfunctional relationship that will eventually end without her knowing the truth about him and his promise to her. In this we may perhaps see a bit of
Fitzgerald himself for he was a man who tried hard to be successful but somehow seemed to immersed in drink and a playboy life, even after marrying, to become too
much of a respected figure. One author, in noting this states that his "playboy image impeded the proper assessment of his work" (Anonymous A Brief Life of Fitzgerald biography.html).
In Whartons story, one that "over 68 years later, we continue to explore," we are offered the reminiscent thoughts and words of two old acquaintances ( They think back to
when they were young and both in love with the same man. This man was not forbidden necessarily, though he was rightfully engaged to the woman we know as Mrs.
