Rome was at one time a substantial civilization. In fact, this was true for a number of years. When at its pinnacle, Rome was extensive
reaching form Britain to Mesopotamia and the Caspian Sea. The Roman Empire reached from Spain in the West to the Dead Sea in the East, and from Britain in
the north to North Africa in the south. Thus, Rome controlled much of Europe and the Mediterranean. Rome was ruled by emperors, who chose to use a military
rule. It is suggested that this type of rule lead to the decline of Rome. Constantine, as emperor was able to bring Christianity to Rome (Niebuhr PG).
Rome was quite extensive in ancient civilization. Most of Europe was at one time occupied by ancient Rome. Europe was influenced greatly by
Rome concerning art, architecture, law, literature, and other fields. The rise and fall of the Roman Empire provides a highly instructive case study that illuminates several relations between the
life-span of cities and the formulation and decline of the empires and civilizations. The Romans themselves took many elements of their civilization from the Etruscans, the Greeks, and other
