major parts: liturgy and prayer. The topic of worship is included the liturgy. Catholic theology will be incorporated within the essay throughout the general topic areas. Given the length of this document, only highlights of selected topics may be included. Omission of any topic is not intended to convey the message that the omitted subjects are not important. Sister Mary Augustine Lane wrote an article in 1991 that addressed catechists for high school students. Sister Lane, a Dominican Sister, had taught for more than twenty years when she wrote that she was a "devotee of the old new catechetics" (Lane 1991, p. 8). She could not seem to get students between the ages of 15 and 17 interested in religious instruction and began examining why this situation existed " (Lane 8). Students had clearly let her know that religious education was boring because it was nothing more than a repetition of what they had been taught in much earlier grades (Lane 8). In her search for help, she found another high school where students were taught the hard stuff - theology, morality and Scripture and they were tested on the content (Lane 8). In other words, this other school was doing the exact opposite of what was being promoted; they were doing what people said would turn kids off of religion and yet, there, the students were interested and enthusiastic (Lane 8). Sister Lane took the lesson to heart and changed her program completely to focus on theology, morality and Scripture, just as she herself had been taught and following what she personally believed in (Lane 8). It worked. Of course, there were initial grumblings but after the fun and games were eliminated and Lane stuck to her beliefs, students began enjoying their religious education classes ...
