Christ and wine to represent the Blood of Christ. In some cases, churches may use actual bread instead of a wafer. The Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church and
some Anglican churches are unique in that they believe in transubstantiation. This means that, to Catholics, the bread and wine are literally and mysteriously transformed into the actual Body and
Blood of Christ. The elements retain the appearance of bread and wine, i.e., wafer and wine, but through the Consecration, they are transformed (Slick, Transubstantiation, 2007). The term used to
describe the transformation is also known as the doctrine of the Real Presence (Slick, Transubstantiation, 2007). The bread and wine do not just symbolize Christ as they do in other
Christian doctrines, they become Christ (Loxterkamp, 2005). Transubstantiation, or the doctrine of Real Presence, are based on a number of verses in Scripture, especially: While they were eating, Jesus
took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, "Take and eat; this is my body." Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered
it to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins" (Matthew 26:26-28).
