general information regarding the baths in Rome, and then discusses specific baths in Rome in relationship to architectural elements and design. The Roman baths discussed are Trajan, Titus, Diocletian, and
Caracalla. The paper then examines the rituals themselves that were associated with the bath houses. Roman Baths When most people envision Roman baths they merely envision a large
ornate room with an equally large ornate bath where men, and women, would come together to bath and relax and enjoy the water. However, Roman baths were far more extensive
than this simple illustration. They often involved exercise before bathing, anointment, sweating, and then a warm bath that would be followed by a cold bath and then followed, more often
than not, by a massage with oils. This was the essential process, though it does not adequately detail the way in which the structures were set up, how the doors
were remained closed to retain heat, or how the individual systems were actually designed. In addition, when we think of the Roman baths we more likely envision the wealthy
and decadent individuals enjoying baths. In truth, the baths were originally only used by the poor because the wealthy did not believe in bathing in public. However, times changed and
influential wealthy people who enjoyed such bathing influenced others so that eventually Roman baths became popular with everyone and all but the very poor enjoyed the baths and the rituals.
