was adopted by English when they created settlements in North America and the second characterized the Spanish/Portuguese settlement of South America. However, the Spanish also believed in the expediency of
extermination when it suited their purposes. The following examination shows Native Americans have fulfilled many economic, social and political roles in the last four hundred years, but seldom have
their received their full measure of civil and political rights. European-descended Americans have adopted many myths to relieve the collective conscious of genocide-related guilt. One such myth is that
North and South America were sparsely inhabited. Historian David E. Stannard argues persuasively, citing original sources, that when Europeans first set foot on in the Western Hemisphere, North and South
America had populations that rivaled Europe in numbers. Stannard cites the descriptions of Cortes, himself, to paint a picture of the city of Tenochtitlan. Unlike European cities, this Aztec city
was clean-so much so that the Spaniards mention this fact frequently in their accounts. Around 60,000 "pale stucco houses filled the island metropolis" (Stannard 5). Cortes wrote
that "all these houses have very large and very good rooms and also very pleasant gardens of various sorts of flowers both on the upper and lowers floors" (Stannard 5).
While the atrocities that the Spanish conquerors inflicted on native populations is well known, in some ways, they were better overlords then the English settler of North America. This is
