art in society demonstrates that the increasing tendency of many Americans to want to limit artistic expression is a mark against democracy, rather than one promoting the principles of freedom
on which this country was founded. Censorship has long been the hallmark of dictators and other repressive regimes. Adolf Hitler was fiercely opposed to modern art. His policies stripped
modern art from the walls of German museums, including the work of German expressionist Emil Nolde, forcing him to work in secret (Herbert). Oppressors have good reason to fear artistic
self-expression as art possess the power to "inspire, unite and innovate," which is why it thrives within the cultural climate of a democracy (Herbert) In 2004, the Dutch city
of Rotterdam hosted an art exhibition entitled "The World According to Kim Jong II," which was comprised of art created under the auspices of state-salaried artists in North Korea
(Herbert). As a consequence of North Korean policies, the works were all complied with state-authorized styles and lacked the authenticity of genuine self-expression. Rather than reflect the artists vision of
reality, they reflected what the North Korean regime felt should be presented to the people as priorities (Herbert). While there is presumably complete freedom of artistic expression in the
