church than they do now. Powell-Smith reports that women were a major force in the spread of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. This was especially true in Britain
and Ireland in the fifth and sixth centuries, which means that women were very influential in the beginnings of the Celtic church. Irish women were drawn to Christianity in large
numbers, in fact, in many regions, there were more women converts than males (Powell-Smith, 1999). In early times, women served as founders of religious institutions. In fact, women were responsible
for the establishment of the first monastery. Many missionaries were converted by women as were the men who eventually became monks. In Celtic Christianity, women served in many roles of
power and prestige. This was not true in Roman Christianity. There is even evidence that women served as bishops in the Celtic church (Powell-Smith, 1999), something that is certainly not
true today. It seems clear that women played a more significant role in early Christianity than they do today. Of course, the roles of women differ depending upon which
Christian religion is being discussed. In Catholicism and the Lutheran faiths, women are not allowed to be priests or reverends. In the Episcopal and Methodist faiths, women perform most of
the same roles as men. Even in those Christian religions that do not permit women to become priests or deacons or any other official in the church, there have been
