answer. There are unlikely role models to come from the woodwork, like Rodney King, the criminal who prompted the LA riots. Actually, despite the fact that he was on the
wrong side of the law, his "why cant we all get along?" outburst may be viewed as an epiphany for King. But few would still think of this man, who
has been arrested numerous times as being a role model. In fact, many people are not good role models. They indulge in substances, are not fulfilled in their careers and
may lash out at their families in frustration. Yet, a typical dysfunctional family today sees many members rise from a messy upbringing to go on to do good things. Generally,
people from any home environment will grow up to either be an exemplary citizen or an individual whose life is less than desirable. It is hard to say who
is a role model and what the characteristics should be. Richard Carlsons (2000) take on role models is as follows: "I think of someone who sets a great example to
others in the areas that most of us consider to be important-kindness, ethics, generosity, caring, patience, thoughtfulness, dedication, and hard work" (p.92). Carlson (2000) says that Mother Theresa is a
good role model. Yet, there are many others who may be considered good role models. Mendelsohn (2005) uses Mr. Magoo as a symbol of kindness and naivet?, and considers this
cartoon character a role model because hostility within him is absent. Many people do point to others like Martin Luther King who fought for the freedom of others as being
good role models. Yet, others who were similarly immersed in just causes have done so with violence. Few violent people are considered role models but they can be. For example,
