Roger Waters "George Roger Waters was born on September 6, 1943. He was born in Great Bookham, in Surrey, which is near a
town called Dorking, about twenty miles south of London" (Bjornetjenesten). His father, Eric Fletcher Waters, was a man who died in WWII, an event that apparently would haunt and influence
Roger and thus also influence much of his music (Bjornetjenesten). It seems as though Waters music career began with a band called
the Abdabs (Bjornetjenesten). It could well be considered to be the beginning of Pink Floyd. One author notes, "Mason, Waters and Wright had all played together as Sigma 6 whilst
studying at Regent Street Polytechnic. With the addition of Barrett, Gale and Close they became first the T-Set, then The Screaming Abdabs and finally The Abdabs" (The Abdabs). They generally
played R&B (The Abdabs). In 1965 Close and Juliette Gale left the band and the band ultimately got the name Pink Floyd (The Abdabs). The name came from "Georgia bluesmen,
Pink Anderson and Floyd Council" and the band got rid of their R&B sound (The Abdabs). In the beginning it appears as
though Syd was the driving and creative force of the group as they gained in popularity (Bjornetjenesten). But, as the band gained that success Syd became more and more unstable
and "After Syd Barrett descended into mental illness, Roger Waters took over as Pink Floyds driving force" (Harris). It was also at that point that David Gilmour joined the band
