be said to have acted the part of the Devil. Discussion Its important to remember that in the era in which the book is set, 17th century Boston, is one
of superstition, Puritan rigidity and hypocrisy. When Hawthorne says "In a word, old Roger Chillingworth was a striking evidence of a mans faculty of transforming himself into a devil, if
he will only, for a reasonable space of time, undertake a devils office," he is to an extent speaking literally. People of the time believed in possession by the devil,
and Chillingworths actions in the book are such as to make him seem truly evil. In the first place, Chillingworth sends his wife Hester ahead of him to the New
World, but does not follow immediately. He is presumed lost, and she has an affair with a man she refuses to name; they have a little girl, Pearl. Chillingworth however
is not dead, but arrives in Boston and takes up a new name (obviously he was Prynne before) and a new identity as a doctor. He makes himself known to
Hester, who is horrified by the revelation that he is still alive, and then sets out to find out who her lover is. He is single-minded in his desire for
revenge, and seeks it, not justice. His name is indicative of his character: he is cold, and twisted; he delights in making trouble for others. He enjoys tormenting Hester,
and when he finds that she will not reveal the name of her lover, he makes it a sort of mission to find it out. At the same time, he
