Founded in 1981 in Durango, Colorado, today Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is a public company traded on the NASDAQ exchange (symbol RMCF); has 274 locations in the United
States and Canada (About Us, 2004); and has enjoyed a 172 percent increase in earnings growth in the past year (Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory Inc, 2004). The founders own
and operate eight company stores; all of the others are franchised locations. Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory will never lead its industry, one that
it shares with Kraft, Unilever, Sara Lee and the other giants. With a market capitalization of $58.3 million, it is a tiny player in its larger market. The
same applies to its segment of its industry. Its primary competitors are Russell Stover and Sees Candies, both of which offer mass-produced items available in every Wal-Mart and Walgreens.
This is not to say that Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory is not a leader in any respect, however. Entrepreneur magazine ranked Rocky
Mountain Chocolate Factory as 183 in its list of the 500 best franchises for 2003, and it has been ranked first in its category every year since 1999 (Becoming a
