of Ages has been carving granite out of the Vermont Mountains for more than a century. Because of its aggressive acquisition activity over the past several years, it now
carves granite from several other places in the country as well. Rock of Ages first business was that of providing granite block for the construction industry, but that was
too cyclical for present managements taste. Rock of Ages shifted focus to making cemetery memorials, which it then needed to sell. Today, Rock of Ages is the "largest
integrated granite quarrier, manufacturer and retailer of finished granite memorials and granite blocks for memorial use" (Rock of Ages Acquires Quarry in North Carolina, 2005).
The company recently acquired the last quarry in North Carolina it did not formerly control, for the result that it owns or leases every part of North Carolina
licensed for quarry operation (Rock of Ages Acquires Quarry in North Carolina, 2005). There were about 3,000 independent dealers in the country in 1998, and about 2,000 of them
sold Rock of Ages monuments (Nelson, 1998). The company has since added an unbranded line to get its memorials in as many retail outlets as possible. Table 13.1 Relationships
Number of firms. As the countrys largest such company, Rock of Ages has "110 Company-owned retail sales outlets in 15 states" (Overview,
n.d.), at least ten active quarries and five production facilities. In addition, it wholesales memorials to 75 independent retailers selling Rock of Ages branded memorials and sells unbranded memorials
