It is a story of two hearts and souls coming to a particular place where they find strength and support in the existence of the other. The following paper examines this relationship, discussing what it is that Rochester finds attractive about Jane, how Jane reacts to Rochester, and how Rochester develops as the novel progresses. Rochester and Jane When Jane and Rochester first meet there is a clear sense that Rochester is an arrogant and demanding man, used to telling others what to do, and used to getting his way. He tells Jane to sit down and then proceeds to ask her numerous questions about herself as though he is arrogantly presuming she is little more than a servant. When she replies that she has no parents and that she comes from a small community he answers, "No wonder you have rather the look of another world....When you came on me in Hay Lane last night, I thought unaccountably of fairy tales, and had half a mind to demand whether you had bewitched my horse" (Bronte Chapter XIII). This is the first indication that he finds something intriguing about her, however, despite his gruff nature and his arrogant stance. We see that this particular attitude of his, combined with his perception of Jane, makes him think a bit more deeply about his character when he tells her to go to the library to play music: "Go into the library -- I mean, if you please. -- (Excuse my tone of command; I am used to say, Do this, and it is done: I cannot alter my customary habits for one new inmate.) -- Go, then, into the library; take a candle with you; leave the door open; sit down to the piano, and play a tune" ...
