It is a story that takes place during the 17th century, beginning in England, and taking the reader to many different places where Crusoe experiences many challenges. Crusoe is a relatively well off individual, coming from a good family, a family that wants him to be a lawyer. But, Crusoe defies the wishes of his family and runs off for adventure. However, despite the fact that he runs away and seeks adventure, Crusoe is still a man of his upbringing. He is still a man of middle class ideals, and a man of religion. This is something clearly seen in second chapter which involves Crusoes capture and freedom involving the Moors. The following paper examines this particular part in the story, arguing how it illustrates the social and Intellectual ideals of Defoe, and Crusoes time. Crusoe and the Moors In the very beginning of the second chapter we see that Crusoe is surely a man of his social class. He states, "It was my great misfortune that in all these adventures I did not ship myself as a sailor; when, though I might indeed have worked a little harder than ordinary, yet at the same time I should have learnt the duty and office of a fore-mast man, and in time might have qualified myself for a mate or lieutenant, if not for a master. But as it was always my fate to choose for the worse, so I did here; for having money in my pocket and good clothes upon my back, I would always go on board in the habit of a gentleman; and so I neither had any business in the ship, nor learned to do any" (Defoe Chapter 2).
