2155 Robert S. McNamara is one of the most memorable twentieth century figures. In "Fog of War" an
announcer from that century says that critics call McNamara "a con man, an IBM machine with legs". He is, admittedly, one of the most controversial Secretaries of Defense that
has ever served. "The Fog of War: Eleven Lessons from the Life of Robert S. McNamara" portrays McNamara during the height of his career as the Secretary of Defense
of the United States. The film clearly depicts McNamara as a conflicted realist. McNamara illumines the fact that, while nations
have always waged warfare against one another, the twentieth century ushered in a type of warfare that was very distinct from historical examples. During this time technology coupled with
changes in ideology to present a very different picture of the world and of our place in that world. The juxtaposition that resulted is hinted at, interestingly enough, by
the introductory frames to this film, frames that depict a younger McNamara using antiquated teletype machines, pull down maps, and 8 x 10 black and white aerial photographs.
"Fog of War" is somewhat of a confessional for McNamara. In his introductory remarks in "Fog of War" McNamara confides that "Any military commander
