to influence the work of many others, not the least of whom was Andy Warhol. His work, for the time, was considered unconventional and quite thought provoking. It has been
noted that, "From the beginning, Rauschenbergs style was unconventional and controversial, often using found objects and materials not traditionally associated with art. (Eisman; Albano, 2000; 31). The following paper examines
the life and works of Robert Rauschenberg. Robert Rauschenbert: Background "Robert Rauschenberg was born in Port Arthur, Texas on October 22,
1925" (Eisman; Albano, 2000; 31). He attended the University of Texas and then served in the United States Navy in WWII (Eisman; Albano, 2000; 31). After his time in the
war he decided to study art and attended "the Kansas City Art Institute (1947-48) and the Academie Julian in Paris (1947). Later he attended Black Mountain College in North Carolina
(1948-49) where he studied with the Bauhaus artist Josef Albers and became friends with the avant-garde composer John Cage" (Eisman; Albano, 2000; 31). It was also in 1949 that he
moved to New York and started attending the Art Students League and then had his first one man showing (Eisman; Albano, 2000; 31).
With something of his biography in mind we move on to examine his works, his style, his influences, and those whom he influenced. One author notes that Rauschenberg would
look through the collages of such artists as Braque and the releifs of Picasso, searching for ideas (Shaw-Eagle, 2001; 5). He was also fascinated with the German artist, a dadist,
