Minister of the United Kingdom from 1834-35 and 1841-46. During his tenure as Home Secretary in 1829, one of his greatest accomplishments was establishing the Metropolitan Police Force. The MPS,
to this day, is the police force responsible for policing Greater London. Before the Metropolitan Police Act was approved to establish the MPS, Great Britain policed itself with state-appointment watchmen
and unpaid constables. Peel, seeing that this system was disorganized and flawed, proposed the Act which enabled the legislation to implement what is often considered the first modern police force.
These officers were known as "bobbies" in England and "peelers" in Ireland. His model, which established a police office in the city to conduct business and two commissioner heads, served
as a prototype for modern urban police departments throughout the entire English speaking world. While these have obviously been modified over the years, Peel also helped establish an outline of
powers for the new police force. Officers were basically empowered to apprehend all disorderly persons who may be loitering, disturbing the peace or blatantly breaking the law. Peel also understood
that these perpetrators would naturally be inclined to resist arrest or apprehension, so the Act made it an offense to assault or resist a police officers arrest. Cognizant that implementing
a police force would take time, Peel made sure that the transition was a smooth one from the watchmen system to the police force taking over. In fact, he waited
