in Vietnam, a war that is now largely considered immoral. This paper discusses McNamaras "performance" in the film The fog of war in light of Sun Tzus 2,500 year old classic The art of war. Discussion Critics such as David Loftus and Alexander Cockburn have both suggested that while we might be able to learn a few things from the film, its main purpose is to give a criminal a forum in which to excuse his actions. Cockburn in particular is vitriolic in his condemnation of Errol Morris, the director, and of McNamara, who, he says "never offers any reflection on the social system that produced and promoted him, a perfectly nice, well-spoken war criminal" (Cockburn, 2004). He describes McNamaras duplicity in claiming responsibility for the strategy of low-level bombing of Japan (which no one can confirm) and at the same time shirking his responsibility for much larger issues (Cockburn, 2004). Cockburn writes that McNamara had the chance to reflect on "the system that blessed him and mercilessly killed millions upon millions under FDR, Truman, Eisenhower, JFK, LBJ, Nixon" and did not; instead, he used the interview to engage in self-analysis (Cockburn, 2004). Interesting as that may be, McNamara still glossed over things that he should have addressed directly and dodged the most important matters, continually laying the blame for the killing of millions at the feet of others (Cockburn, 2004). For these critics, the film is a useless and fraudulent exercise in self-promotion. And since it is an interview, McNamara can say what he likes, explain things his way, and justify his actions. He gets away with it because the director "didnt do his homework," and lets McNamara slide on points where he should have been nailed to the wall (Cockburn, 2004).
