in Hemmingways novel to indicate why Robert Jordan involved himself in the Spanish Civil War. What we can find, for reasons, appears to be somewhat vague and generally inferred. Bearing
that in mind the following paper examines Robert Jordans reasons for involving himself in the Spanish Civil War. The Spanish Civil War We understand, as mentioned previously, that
Robert volunteered for service in the Spanish Civil War. Also as mentioned is the fact that he is based somewhat on the authors experiences and attitudes. Hemingway was a man
who was intelligent enough to see the war coming. He was also one of the many who fought for the leftist, or Loyalist side. He fought through words, and the
result of some of the beliefs is seen in "For Whom the Bell Tolls." Knowing these facts helps us to see why Robert, like so many young men, joined in
duty in the Spanish Civil War. "The fact that the protagonist of the novel, Robert Jordan, is an American is not unusual. The Spanish Civil War quickly became infiltrated
by foreign intervention on both sides, and indeed has been likened to a testing ground for World War II, as the forces of Fascism and Communism pitted against one another"
