most powerful changes to the economy came with the creation of the steamboat, the first one designed and implemented by Robert Fulton. As one author notes, "Fulton had ushered in
the era of steamboats" (Dayton, 2007). The following paper examines the steamboat, from a primarily economic perspective, as it involves the south and Robert Fulton. Robert Fultons Steamboat
First and foremost it seems that the most important reality to note is that Fultons work was primarily focused in the North, in relationship to the Hudson River and the
Northern States. However, it must also be understood that the Northern States were the location for the arrival and import of goods from the South, and so Fultons connection to
the south, from an economic position, is crucial. One could perhaps state that much of the economic relationship between Fulton, steamboats, and the south came with cotton. "Cotton, at
first a small-scale crop in the South, boomed following Eli Whitneys invention in 1793 of the cotton gin, a machine that separated raw cotton from seeds and other waste" (U.S.
Department of State, 2007). At this time many planters began buying up land from small farmers who were on their way out west (U.S. Department of State, 2007). Through this
social and economic change many plantation owners became wealthy, especially in relationship to slave ownership (U.S. Department of State, 2007). And, in all honesty, slavery itself would not have become
so powerful in the south without steamboats. Panza (2004) indicates that, in relationship to a few years later in history, "Commercial steamboating
