Call him, if it makes things any easier, a tragic poet, but it might be useful every now and then to come out from under the shelter of that literary word. The universe that he conceives is a terrifying universe" (Essa). He urges the individual to "Read the poem called Design and see if you sleep the better for it. Read Neither Out Far nor In Deep, which often seems to me the perfect poem of our time, and see if you are warmed by anything in it except the energy with which emptiness is perceived" (Essa). Interestingly enough, most people envision Robert Frost as a poet who presented the reader with pleasurable visions of nature. One author notes, "To think of Robert Frost is to think of simple New England pleasures: stone walls, apple picking and snowy evenings" (Kirkwood). However, for those who look deeply into Frosts poems and see what he is looking at, the vision becomes terrifying. The following paper looks at the poems that Trilling urged the reader to examine, and discusses how they can truly be seen as terrifying. Frost as Terrifying In first examining how and why Frost is considered terrifying we must first understand that Trilling did not necessarily tell us why he thought that Frost was terrifying. Yet, there are others who say, and have said, the same thing and then provide a reason as to why they think that particular way. In first examining one such individuals opinions we can better understand the reasoning behind perceiving Frost as terrifying.
