and turmoil. Therefore, it is not surprising that much of Frosts poetry expresses a rather wistful regret for the simpler eras, when people lived closer to the land and to
nature and the rigors and strains of postmodernism had yet to descend on American society. This sentiment begin his poem "Directive," which urges "Back out of all this now
too much for us/Back in a time made simple by the loss/of detail..." (lines 1-3)("Directive" 1779). This feeling of wistful regret for the simplicity of the past is also plain
felt in one of this best loved poems, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening." In this poem, the narrator stops his horse and buggy to gaze into the beauty
and serenity of a forest silently filling with snow on a dark winters evening. The narrator enjoys the feeling of serene, natural calm only for a moment, before commenting, "The
woods are lovely, dark and deep/But I have promises to keep/And miles to go before I sleep/And miles to go before I sleep" (lines 13-16)("Stopping" 1775). This lyrical phrase and
imagery perfectly sums up the pressures modern age, as the narrator is too pressed for time to pause and appreciate nature more than a moment before he feels his responsibilities
calling him and moves on. However, Frost also indicates that when it came to critical decision points, he personally did not always choose to give into societal pressure and
