Gold Can Stay, Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening, and Desert Places Frost utilizes nature and also clearly focuses on the season of Winter, whether it be through
the time of the season or the coming of the season. The following paper examines the focus of Frost as it relates to Winter in these four poems.
Robert Frost In the first poem to be examined, After Apple Picking, Frost talks of picking apples, clearly an activity that takes place in the Fall of the year. However,
he clearly illustrates that Winter is simply a moment away, leading to perhaps an urgency of getting things done. The narrator notes, "Essence of winter sleep is on the night"
(Frost [1] 7). He then illustrates how he looked through a piece of glass that was actually a sheet of frozen water that had formed in a trough and how
"It melted, and I let it fall and break" (Frost [1] 13). There are many things a reader could infer in this poem, in relationship to its symbolic content,
but the presence of Winter coming on is clearly a powerful element, or theme, in the poem as the narrator illustrates how he is ready to sleep. In this respect
he is offering up the coming of Winter as a time of sleep, of hibernation to an extent, of the earth and of himself. In Nothing Gold Can Stay
the poem is speaking of Fall and how that which is gold involves that time when everything changes to a golden hue just prior to the coming of winter. He
