for declining President Lincoln's offer of command of the Union army at the outbreak of the Civil
War. There is no question that Robert E. Lee was a master of military strategy and that he was a
man of the Southern tradition of honor. That he would cast his lot with the South rather than to
be disloyal to his native Virginia is testament to the depth of his commitment. Lee knew going
into the war and upon resigning his commission with the US army that he was joining a losing
proposition, but he chose what appeared to him to be the side of personal honor, rather than that
of political loyalty. Bibliography lists 6 sources.

The slavery issue was only a small part of the reason that the South determined to become a free and independent nation separate
from the United States. It was far from the only issue leading to War Between the States, but it certainly was the most obvious. Robert E. Lee was
a son of Virginia; indeed his father had fought on the side of secession in the Revolutionary War. Though he was fully committed to his country, he chose to
honor his ties with the South when given the choice. Early History Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) was born as a result of
the marriage of two of Virginias most prominent families (Davis, 2000), and his early years were lived in the opulence of Stratford Hall, the familys ancestral estate. Despite Roberts
fathers position of prominence in the state and in the country, "Light Horse Harry" Lee chose to squander the familys riches and left for Barbados when Robert was only eight
years old. Light Horse Harry died in the Caribbean without ever seeing his family again. Roberts fortunes likely would have been far different had the family retained its wealth
and position until Robert reached adulthood. As it was, however, he won an appointment to West Point and later came to be regarded as one of the countrys most
brilliant military strategists. He had great personal conflict over the slavery issue when as anti-slavery sentiment grew. He had married into another estate following his student years at
