ROBERT E. LEE Author H. W. Crocker has written a great book about a great man. And while many are first to point out that Lee did not fight for the winning side, the fact is that does not mean the man himself was not a successful motivator and leader. Crocker writes about much more than Lees duties in the military, however. Also included are his education at West Point, his outstanding moral character and his business savvy. Lee was much more than Lee, the General. He was an individual that many could look up to. Lee was much more than just a general in the Civil War. The fact that Robert E. Lee was able to turn a tiny college into a well-known university when he was a teacher, as well as turn his heavily debt-ridden inheritance into a working farm as well speaks not only for his intelligence but for his leadership abilities. LEADERSHIP Many men are great leaders, but it takes more than simple leadership ability. It takes the ability to motivate others in order to truly lead them. This describes Robert E. Lee perfectly. Fighting in the Civil War with a group of soldiers who seemed to be getting more thoroughly beaten every day, Lee nonetheless kept their spirits high and worked to make them proud of what they were fighting for.
