as something of an enigma, a man who was mysterious and confusing, but a man who did his job and perhaps remains very unappreciated for his character and life. As
one author notes, "Few figures in American history are more divisive, contradictory or elusive than Robert E. Lee, the reluctant, tragic leader of the Confederate Army, who died in his
beloved Virginia at age 63 in 1870, five years after the end of the Civil War."1 The following paper examines the life of Robert E. Lee as it involves the
Civil War. Robert E. Lee According to one author, "Robert Edward Lee was the less-than-longed-for fifth child of a mother in uncertain health and reduced financial straits struggling
essentially alone to maintain the fa?ade of family in a home that was not hers."2 He led a childhood that was less than idyllic. He grew to a man, of
course, and a man who loved his state of Virginia. It was this love that would lead him to the Civil War, and lead him to perhaps take a post
he would rather not have experienced. As one author indicates, "At the heart of Lees story is one of the monumental choices in American history: revered for his honor,
Lee resigned his U.S. Army commission to defend Virginia and fight for the Confederacy, on the side of slavery."3 He was something of a stern and quiet man, and certainly
a man whom the South saw as the embodiment of honor and integrity. Blount notes that, in relationship to his character on the battlefield he was very fiery, but also
