with such incidents, all ages seem susceptible to this sort of anger. In one case, 75-year-old J.C. King was angry that 41-year-old Larry Remm, Jr. honked at him for blocking
traffic. King followed Remm and when he pulled off the road, he hurled his proscription bottle at him before smashing Remms knees with this 1992 Mercury (Vest; et. al., 1997;
p. 24). Its called "road rage"-and its a phenomenon that is increasing across the country. Road rage can often be violent, but it has other manifestations as well. Weve
all seen the driver (usually a male) who turns super-macho the minute he gets behind the wheel of a car. Youve seen him "roar past you on the road and
seen the set of his jaw and the squint of his eye" (Ferguson, 1998; p. 65). You can tell that in his own mind, this no longer a mere, ordinary
man, "this is Chuck Yeager breaking the sound barrier" (p. 65). Because accidents blamed on road rage usually involve young men, some traffic experts have blamed male hormones (Chadwick;
Edwards, 1997). Dr. Richardo Martinez, the director of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and one of the countrys top transportation officials, reported at a congressional hearing on the subject
that road rage and aggressive driving were factors contributing to two-thirds of all traffic fatalities (Chadwick; Edwards, 1997). According to Martinez, 28,000 are attributable to this psychological phenomenon. Dr. Martinez
