From the Nile in Egypt to the Mississippi in the United States, rivers are perhaps the most important form of waterways in the world. The following paper examines the importance and role of rivers in early America. Rivers and Early America One can well look at any map of early America and note that there are many settlements that rose up along the banks of rivers. There are likely many reasons for this, many of which cannot adequately be addressed in the short space available herein. Most people may simply assume that rivers were important because they provided transportation for many people. But, according to one particular author this was not necessarily the case: "Freight traffic on water moved in boats built by craftsmen and piloted by experienced sailors. Plain people paddled their canoes to cross rivers, visit neightbors, and to fish; otherwise they traveled by land" (Hawke, 1989; 149). And yet, despite the fact that there were many rivers in early America "most of America moved about by land, usually on horseback from mid-century [1600s] on" (Hawke, 1989; 149). From this one can see that clearly the rivers were used to transport goods and products across or through a great portion of early America. As the nation grew this was even more the case, especially with the Mississippi which provided many people along the river with access to transportation as well as products and goods. It was also a very important river in relationship to early America and trappers which were an important part of American history. And, with slavery and southern plantations the Mississippi was invaluable. ...
